But I felt that I was dealing with a large ecosystem, the port of Rotterdam.<\/p>\n

The innovation assignment we had given ourselves went far beyond the scope of the organization and was potentially disruptive: How can we reduce the turnaround time of vessels in the port so they can leave faster<\/strong>. This is good for the port as a whole and the individual companies in it. If you start looking into this, a whole world of implicit and explicit supply chains opens for you. All kinds of interdependencies that together ensure that the port as a whole works. This is not arranged centrally but goes through a multitude of decentralized initiatives that all interact with each other. A port is therefore a complex ecosystem<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Anyone who has ever worked with other organizations knows that it is not easy! All kinds of unexpected things happen, organizations do not keep agreements, or collaboration is very difficult because organizations may, may not want to participate. This unpredictability and limited control you have in your collaboration is exactly why collaborations between organizations are so difficult! After all, you can’t force independent organizations to work with you!

BACK TO the port example: reduction of turnaround times of vessels.<\/p>\n

This is big task. And it is very tempting to look at how the processes between port organizations work and then optimize them with new innovative solutions. We initially started with that idea in 2011. But that soon turned out not to be workable. We had no influence on the organizations involved, let alone their processes! How do you solve this dilemma? By realizing that with these kinds of complex tasks a ready-made solution<\/strong> is usually NOT<\/strong> possible, but movement<\/strong> to something else IS<\/strong>. You just look for where in your existing situation, you can give the system a push in the right direction. For that, you must look at the patterns between organizations.
